That fall is here and in full and glorious colour is amazing to me. Where has this year gone? I hope you've all had a wonderful year so far - now that the holidays are approaching there are a lot of events to attend and I have some of those, as well as some fun painting parties coming up. My classes at Bellevue Art & Frame and my Colour Workshop were a big hit. I'll be coming up with another Workshop in January so I'll let you know more details about soon. In the meantime...

September 17 and 18th I will be participating in the Edmonds Art Studio Tour 2011! Please come by and visit, I'll be in Barbara Wyatt's gorgeous ceramics studio with greeting cards, various prints, and original artwork. We'll be there all weekend to chat with fellow art enthusiasts!

Happy "Spring" (those of us in the Pacific Northwest are dubious),

I am really late this month in sending this, so I'm going to go ahead and get May in there as well! I'm also including some of my June dates for Corks & Canvases since I know we're selling out quickly and many of you like to plan ahead. Mother's Day is coming up - one-up your siblings or surprise your wife with the gift of wine and creativity!!

This Sunday I will be painting on-location at Bellevue Art & Frame - please stop by and say hi, and give me a break from the work! A complete painting in 4 hours, between 12-4pm. The final piece will be auctioned off in May with half the proceeds to benefit the Bellevue Schools Foundation. If you've wanted an original piece of art, but haven't wanted to pay the high costs, you MUST check out this event! My painting last year sold for $150!! Amazing cost when you consider that my 16x20" pieces retail for $650!! See their website for more information and directions.

Every month: See 2-3 works at Parklane Gallery in Kirkland. This coop gallery changes out its work every month so there is always something new to see! May is "Miniatures" month - an incredibly popular mini show with work from around the globe! You won't see anything of mine in that show - I could never work that small :)
May-July 2011: Wellspring Family Services in Seattle will play host to 16 of my pieces.
April-July 2011: EAFA hosted by The Gardens at Town Square, Bellevue: Group Show.

Other News:

I am hard at work on a submission for the poster art of the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival! Have been taking photos and sketching at different times of day so that I can find the right composition and mood! Wish me luck :)
Evening Magazine and their darling host Meeghan Black aired a segment that featured Corks & Canvases (and me as the instructor!) on 4/12!! The video is not yet available online, but I will tape my TV's recording and post to YouTube soon. I'll forward as soon as it's done. This segment really shows how fun it is, and how well everyone does, even though many have never picked up a brush before!
This July I will be painting on-location during the weeklong Kittitas County Fresh Air Artists Festival! Come and check it out, visit the many artists who will be painting - see the Art Exhibit of work created during the week on Friday night and just get away from it all!
I'll be having a 2-person show in the front window space of the Parklane Gallery this August. Am hard at work figuring out what I'm going to create - stay tuned!!

And, saving the best for last: one of my favourite people on the planet, the brilliant and beautiful Alexa Turner has completed her Senior Project: The Art of Learning about Art. After more than 40 hours of study, learning to draw, and then paint in b&w before I'd even let her use color, she completed a piece that astonished all! Congrats, sweetie! All that hard work really paid off!! Now off to Washington State University for her!!

It's March! Spring should be right around the corner - and I am looking forward to it!

Music has always had a big influence on my work. When I paint to Bach, I find myself getting very nostalgic and even melancholy - my colours are more muted. When I paint to Ray LaMontagne, I find myself slowing down and painting looser. And when I am painting to classic Nirvana I find myself getting into darker subject matter and applying the paint quickly and with more paint on the brush. It really is subconscious. Try creating (whether it's writing, painting, sculpting...) to different music and pay attention to how differently your work turns out! Paint the same subject matter to different music and it becomes even more clear.

3) Creative Art at Rosehill Community Center, open to any children in Kindergarten–Fifth Grade. The classes will begin Feb 17th and go 6 weeks through March 24th, Thursdays from 4-5pm. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's snowing outside right now, and it's gorgeous. This weather makes me want to curl up in front of the fire with a good book - right now I'm reading about Picasso, after visiting the exhibit in Seattle I'm even more inspired by his work.

Speaking of New Year, it's time for me to announce the winner of the drawing for a painting!
The winner is: Ashley Yonich! Congrats, Ashley! It's a 4"x4" painting of a magnolia blossom, painted in acrylics on canvas and ready to hang without framing.
Each year I draw from my class attendees at Michaels for a small work created by myself. Get in and take more than one class and you'll be entered multiple times! The next drawing will happen in June.

4) Coming next month: Artwalk in Mukilteo. I'll have work hanging in the Art Building, down by the ferry dock!

Art Tip of the Month:

Feeling frustrated with Acrylic Paints and how fast they dry? Use it to your advantage! Try to paint one area, let it dry, then glaze over it with another color. For example, if you paint a yellow-green apple, let it dry completely, then take some red paint and thin it down with matte or gloss medium (preferred) or water (ok for practicing) and paint right over the whole apple. It'll glaze the apple red! You can achieve this with oils as well, but you have to wait for the first layer to dry which can feel like forever! Acrylics are great for glazes because they do dry quickly. I've actually glazed over an entire painting before to "warm" it up!

Coming next month: I have a wonderful piece of art that one of my students created, Claire Sturm! She did a continuous line drawing of a lily, and it's wonderful. Also coming soon: A beautiful handmade art book created by Audrie Magno - which I will contribute to and post for you all to see and enjoy!

Hello everyone! Fall is here and with it comes the vibrant leaves and moody skies. I hope to get out there and get some plein air painting done (under shelter, of course!) at some point. Anyways, here is the latest news regarding shows and Classes that I have in November and beyond:

SHOWS:

Parklane Gallery in Kirkland - I always have original art, prints, and cards for sale at this wonderful gallery in vibrant downtown Kirkland. ART TIP OF THE MONTH:
Creatively stuck? Want to loosen up a little? Take 2 minutes every day to sit in a quiet space and attempt a continuous line drawing. Draw your coffee mug, the printer beside your computer, your kid at naptime. Anything goes - no one ever need see it - just put your pen or pencil on the paper and don't pick it up - make it really messy and loose. I do these regularly and they are a fun way to create a loose drawing to get me ready for the real work ahead!

OCTOBER, 2010:

Happy Fall, everyone! With the trees turning shades of orange, red, and yellow I am feeling inspired to paint! Here is a list of my current and upcoming shows, class schedules and a painting tip for you! Enjoy :)

SHOWING:
1) Starbucks on 196th in Lynnwood. I currently have 4 floral paintings hanging there.
2) Mu.Shoe, 403 Main Street, Edmonds: Stop by for Artwalk on October 21st after 6pm. Enjoy their fine italian leather shoes and some art at the same time! http://www.mushoe.com.
3) Parklane Gallery: currently I have 2 pieces hanging in the gallery. The first Tuesday of September I'll have new work up! Work changes monthly so be sure to stop by regularly. http://www.parklanegallery.com
4) Bellevue Art & Frame: Join me at the reception and auction on September 25th, 6-8pm. Bids start at $75. You can see all of the pieces, and get more information at http://bit.ly/9LIE6y.
5) Camano Island Art Show: Farms, Fields, and Foliage. I have 3 pieces which have been accepted into the juried show, which takes place September 24th through the 26th. CLASSES:
New in October: I'll be teaching beginner painting classes in Bellevue, as well!. Remember, classes at Michaels are only $27 and you'll be entered into a drawing for a free small work of mine. The next drawing will be held this December. Please don't hesitate to email me for more information about any of these classes. Note: I'll also be starting work with an after-school program at Woodin Elementary in Bothell, and Penny Creek Elementary in Everett through The Art Workshop, based in Mukilteo. You can contact your local PTA if you're interested in having your child participate.

PAINTING TIP:
If you are painting the human figure, look carefully at the anatomy before you begin your drawing. Notice how the ankles have two bones that kind of "pop" out - one inside and one outside. The one on the inside, or in-step, will always be higher up that the one on the outside. Take a look in the mirror! Our bodies have all sorts of little things like that and when you know about them, you will be more effective at drawing and painting plausible figures.

This piece is one that I did in person at Bellevue Art & Frame in four hours as part of their "Artist a Day" benefit auction during the month of August, 2010. The piece will be up for auction until Sept 25th. Half the proceeds will go to the Bellevue Schools Foundation.

It has been a great first half of 2010. The beginner's painting classes at Michaels have been a blast and I have loved working with those of you who have participated.

BIANNUAL DRAWING, NUMBER 1
As a thank you, I offered to hold a drawing of all my students and award one lucky winner an original 4x4 painting, created be me! That lucky person turned out to be Kristen Sekulich, who was actually part of my very first class at Michaels. Congratulations, Kristen! She is now the owner of "Magnolia C"

CURRENTLY SHOWING:
• 13 new works (and prints of the work) are being displayed in the front east window at Parklane Gallery in Kirkland. The show is entitled "An Appreciation of Life" and deals with the joys of childhood. You can see photos of all the pieces and some information about the show by clicking here. 5% of all artist proceeds will go to Childhaven. The show will be in the gallery through August 1st. If you want to stop by and see me painting another painting for the series (a pic of kids at bat in t-ball) come by July 25th between 11 and 3pm!
• "Smitty's Marina" is at the Mercer Island Community Center at Mercer View as part of the EAFA (Eastide Association of Fine Art) Juried Member Show. The piece took home second place in the show! The show will remain at the Community Center until July 30th.
• I have work showing continuously at Starbuck's in Lynnwood: 4028 196th Street SW
As part of the Edmonds Artwalk, I will have work in the Fabric of Life store in downtown Edmonds on Thursday August 19th.

Chartpak USA, Inc. has asked me to represent them in teaching beginner's painting classes at the Michaels store in Kirkland. The classes will cover basic techniques using acrylic paints to create landscapes and floral still-life paintings. I will also be doing a demo from time to time to show what students will learn during the 2-hour workshop! To sign up, visit Michaels in person (address is below).
